Kris Barz is a Brazilian comics artist currently based in Fort Collins. His comics are called Out&About (www.outandaboutcomics.com). The project originated in Brazil under the name ""Torta de Climão"" in 2014. His goal was to portray realistic LGBTQ persons with their own personalities, lives and characteristics, tackling issues related to the LGBTQ community (like homophobia, prejudice and sexism) and universal themes such as love, family, friendship and daily life situations. The author Kris Barz will talk about his experience on creatin comics for the LGBTQ demographic in his country, the difficulties to make comics that are appealing, funny and informative at the same time, how to work (or not) with stereotypes without limiting character's personalities, how to be inclusive in creating realistic characters, the balance between representation in his comics and his artistic autonomy, the challenges he had finding the audience and the publisher, issues related to prejudice in Brazil. The talk will be enhanced by visual and graphic support showing the range of his work in Brazil and also around the world, as well as examples with comics strips, characters and sketches from his creative process.
